Mis-Direction
In the usability game, perception is everything (continued).
This anecdote arrived via email-as-joke spam from a friend. As an ex-resident of Amsterdam, I really appreciate this uniquely Dutch approach to "the User Experience".
"In Amsterdam, the tile under the urinals in Schipol Airport are so immaculately clean that they would pass insepection in a hospital operating room.
But nobody notices.
What they do notice is that every urinal has a fly in it."
Look Closer.
The fly is actually the black outline of a fly, etched into the porcelain. It improves the aim. When a man sees a fly, he aims at it.
Fly-in-urinal research found that etchings reduce spillage by 80%. It's a perfect example of Process Control. Te gek. (Popular Dutch phrase: "too crazy")
